The Dreyeckland region and the Rhine

by Jean-François MATTLER - webmaster last modified 2006-09-24 00:30

The majestic and historic river flows through the Dreyeckland and acts as a border between the three countries.

On the French side, the two départements making up Alsace, Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin, were named after it and the Dreyeckland is located to the south of the latter. From Basel, the Rhine is “domesticated” in that it is divided into the industrial Canal D’Alsace (with its boats and hydroelectric dams) and the wild Rhine (where preserving fauna and flora is a constant concern, mainly for German environmentalists). At the same time, France and Switzerland work together towards the purification of its waters.
